Learn to Lead Climb and Belay

The GOAT Learn to Lead Climb and Belay training class is the next step to becoming a fully independent climber in our community and making the most of our amazing gym!

This course is designed for intermediate and experienced climbers alike to learn how to control the ropes, lead climb safely and lead belay their climbing partner in the correct up to date industry recommended manner. The class is made up of 2 separate classes of approximately 2 hours in duration.

In class 1 participants will learn:

  • Correct lead belay practices
  • Lead ethics
  • Clipping styles, positions and clipping correctly
  • Rope management
  • How to lead belay and catch a lead fall

In class 2 participants will:

  •  Practice all the skills you learned in class 1, first using our auto belay units as a backup, and then onto the real thing under the careful watch of our instructor team.
  • Go through a full mock gym lead test to make sure you and your climbing partner operate to the high standards we expect.
  • Learn a few tips for those situations you just need a bit of help in.

All participants who wish to be able to lead climb and lead belay independently at GOAT Climbing Gym, must have:

  • Taken the Learn to Belay class
  • Passed the Top Rope belay test
  • Have completed all of our dark green climbs!

We recommend signing up with your climbing partner, it’s more fun learning together!

All the equipment required for the class is included, however for your comfort we recommend you have your own personal climbing harness and climbing shoes.

*As a special offer for non members, you can keep your rental shoes and harness on and work on the skills learned after your class with the “keep climbing after class pass” for only $15!

Leaders In The Making 101

The GOAT Leaders In the Making 101 is the 2nd class in our Learn to Lead Climb and Belay series. This class is focused on honing your skills as a lead climber!

  • Reading lead routes on the ground
  • Understanding clipping positions and clipping windows
  • On the wall pacing and strategy
  • What to do while falling
  • Addressing fear of falling & how to practice falls
  • Build our community of lead climbers!

Leaders In The Making 102

The GOAT Leaders in the Making 102 class is the 3rd class in our Learn to Lead Climb and Belay series. This class is focused on honing your skills as a lead belayer

  • Refine your belay technique
  • Understand the effects of belayer positioning
  • Understand the effects of the amount of slack given
  • Give you the tools to navigate tricky belay situations
  • Practice belaying under the supervision and guidance of an instructor
  • Build our community of lead climbers!

Leaders In The Making 201

The GOAT Leaders In The Making 201 is the final class in our Learn to Lead Climb and Belay series. This class is designed to:

  • Give you the tools to navigate advanced belay situations
  • Cover belaying on different belay devices
  • Show you how to catch a close fall
  • Discuss advanced belay moments
  • How to assess potential hazards and how to adjust belaying to protect the climber.
  • Cover advanced route reading, planning and redpoint climbing tactics and projecting.
  • Build our community of lead climbers!
