The route setting team at GOAT Climbing Gym is a collaborative group of our staff who take their love of climbing and share it with all of our members, guests and competitors. Route setting is vital to Goat Climbing so we make sure our routes and boulders are fun, fair, challenging and aesthetically pleasing!
All climbs in the V Beginner / V0, V1 and rope grades 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 are set in a forest dark green, giving simple color identification for easy, fun warm ups or intro to climbing climbs. After all, Green means GO!
To keep things fresh, we aim to rotate our Autobelays every 6 weeks, Boulder zones every 5 weeks, Top Rope and Lead climbs every 3 months. If and when we host competitions this will shorten our rotations.
To stay up to date with new sets, setting area closures and to check out the setters beta, follow our social media channels and don’t forget to tag us so we can feature you on our Instagram page!

Setters
Position Title: GOAT Chief Route Setter, USAC “L4”
Why do you like Climbing?! I’ve been climbing since 2008, and routesetting since 2012. While I’ve mostly been a Southeastern climber in the Chattanooga region, I’ve also spent a lot of time at Smith Rock, Oregon and Indian Creek, UT as favorite trip destinations. I love all kinds of climbing, but gravitate toward climbs with unique or striking aesthetics regardless of style. My favorite climbing days are long approaches and sustained pitches.
Favorite US crags:
Rainbow Wall in Las Vegas, NV
Slow Children in Index, WA
Margin of Profit in Chattanooga, TN
Space Ranger in Chattanooga, TN
Cat Daddy in Albuquerque, NM
What inspires you? I love setting climbs that the community can get behind as a shared experience, as well as any opportunity to educate or mentor in the indoor climbing industry or outdoors on real rock.
Position Title: GOAT Setter, USAC “L4”
Why do you like Climbing?! Climbing is everything to me! I love the community it creates, the language it develops and the unique movement patterns that are built by climbers as they solve a problem or crux in a climb.
Years climbing: More than I care to admit! 20+
Climbing style in 3 words: Heels, Hips and Shoulders
Favorite US crag: Ten Sleep canyon WY
Favorite climb you have set and why: The Dark Green top ropes at Goat! These “introductory” climbs enable new climbers to gain the feeling of advanced movement that an experienced climber gets from higher level climbing, they’re super fun and it’ll be rewarding to see our community enjoying that feeling of achievement.
If you need to find me at Goat I’ll be: On the lead wall, in the office, coaching and at the front desk!
What inspires you? Setting fun, fair and aesthetically pleasing climbs for our community, youth programs and at a national level, that and seeing the feedback on people’s faces when they come down off a climb!
Position Title: GOAT Route Setter
Why do you like Climbing?! The great friends I’ve made and beautiful places I’ve discovered because of climbing
Years climbing: 2
Climbing style in 3 words: Big, punchy, punter
Favorite US crag: Red River Gorge KY
Favorite climb you have set and why: A tie for the first climb I ever set and most recent one:)
If you need to find me at Goat I’ll be: In the snack closet or teaching classes!
What inspires you? Hard climbing and undiscovered lines
Position Title: GOAT Route Setter
Why do you like Climbing?! Climbing gives me that child-like feeling of moving your body and just having fun! I used to skateboard a lot before even learning about rock climbing as a sport. The two share the same need for dedication or stubbornness, as well as accepting some level of risk. You keep trying until you land the trick, or you stick that move and send! That unparalleled sense of satisfaction you get afterwards is why I like climbing so much. On top of that, the community is great; everyone is always helpful and supportive.
Years climbing: 1.5
Climbing style in 3 words: Big, Dynamic, Pinchy
Favorite US crag: I haven’t done much outdoor climbing, but I really like the Gunks.
Favorite climb you have set and why: It’s the first set that I am really proud of. It’s a black V3 stem boulder where you eventually press up off of two Flathold volumes to get your feet up. It looks good and is accessible to a lot of climbers!
If you need to find me at Goat I’ll be: If im not setting, I’ll be training on the second floor or taking a nap on the mezzanine couch.
What inspires you? Seeing anyone trying hard and putting in effort for something they’re passionate about. Climbing, studying, whatever it is. I find that energy contagious and makes me want to do the same.
